Portable, valuable and easy to resell: generators, compressors and power tools are among the most-stolen items on construction sites. A few disciplined habits dramatically cut the risk of loss and the downtime that comes with it.
Lock down and light up
Store equipment in a locked, well-lit compound overnight. Good lighting (including tower lights) is one of the cheapest and most effective deterrents. Immobilise towable items and remove keys from machines when not in use.
Track and log everything
Keep a register of every machine, its serial number and who signed it out. GPS trackers on high-value assets pay for themselves the first time a machine goes missing, and make recovery far more likely.
- Record make, model and serial number of each unit
- Sign equipment in and out by shift
- Fit GPS/telematics on high-value machines
- Photograph assets for insurance and identification
Control site access
Limit who can enter storage areas, use fencing and access control, and make security part of the daily close-out routine. Most losses happen when equipment is left unattended and unsecured at the end of the day.
